Alma June - Vocals & Guitar
Alma June has been writing songs since early childhood. A pivotal spark came when she was gifted an old classical guitar by one of her mom’s friends at age 10. Through brooding, rough and lonely teenage years, Alma found solace through moody classical guitar practice. An extraordinary teacher and friend exposed her to the emotionally charged sounds of artists like Francisco Tárrega, and Heitor Villa-Lobos, which colored the rest of her musical journey.
Fast forward to her studies at the University of Southern Maine: she began studying classical guitar but soon switched to composition as the need for greater freedom and experimentation became essential for her continued practice. Her love of punk, jazz, and grunge converged while studying classical vocal styles, and synthesizing these influences resulted in the formation of Alma June and the Persian Cats.
